Vinalhaven Wave

I am beyond thrilled to share this quilt with you today. When Mister Domestic put out the call on Instagram for makers for his fabric launch party, I knew I needed to be part of it. I’ve followed him on Instagram for ages, and he was a huge inspiration to me when I was starting my business.

I’ve had this quilt design saved in my EQ files for awhile. It might sound cheesy, but I honestly had a dream about this pattern. (In the dream, I was taking a class and we were making these blocks). I woke up and drafted the block…and then set it aside. As soon as I saw the Catch and Release fabrics, I knew this was the perfect pair.

I submitted the design idea to Mister Domestic, and he chose me! We’re totally bff’s now. He helped me refine the color scheme a bit – choosing the perfect combination of solids for the bands took a couple colorations. My first version was (in my opinion) pretty good. With his help, the final version is ah-may-zing.

I love ombre and color blend effects (you can see that here in my Cascading Colors quilt), so I knew I needed to do that with the Catch and Release fabrics. It just provides so much movement to the quilt top. The honey gold is perfect as sun reflecting on water. These blocks go together quickly to create gentle waves. I got matching threads to do some custom quilting on Minerva.

I’m still working on the pattern for this quilt, it will be offered in the future.

Oh, and the name of this post? I’ve mentioned Vinalhaven before. It requires a ferry ride to get over to the island. We always call my in-laws to let them know which ferry we’re on so they know when to go to their deck and wave. We do a big broad wave with both arms from the ferry and they do the same.

So the gorgeous water colors, the gentle waves of the quilt blocks, and wonderful summer memories all add up to Vinalhaven Wave.

Huge Thank You to Mister Domestic and to Art Gallery Fabrics. I had an amazing time making this quilt.
